BMW X1 in India Price Starts @ 22 Lakhs; Both Petrol & Diesel Variants Launched

The new BMW X1 was launched in New Delhi in three variants: BMW X1 sDrive18i (petrol), BMW X1 sDrive20d (diesel) and BMW X1 sDrive20d Exclusive (diesel) and can now be ordered at BMW dealerships across India.

New BMW X1 Features in Brief:
The new BMW X1 expands and enhances the range of BMW X models by yet another innovative vehicle concept. Through its body design the BMW X1 demonstrates self-confident elegance, versatile and sporting character, as well as spontaneous agility. For the first time the features and characteristics of a BMW X model are carried over in modern style into a unique vehicle in the premium compact segment.

The interior of the BMW X1 is characterised by clear function and trendsetting, modern style. In the cockpit, the centre console is tilted slightly towards the driver so all the relevant operating functions are arranged to provide a sense of personal control. The elevated seating position, a generous feeling of space, the wide range of storage options and the variable interior offer ideal conditions for enjoying the new BMW X1 both in an urban environment and beyond.

The interior can be flexibly adjusted to individual requirements. The new BMW X1 has room for spontaneity through fully variable rear seats with separately folding centre section and adjustable backrest angle. The rear-seat backrest comes with ten-stage tilt adjustment from 1 to 31 degrees. The rear-seat backrest is divided in three parts (a split of 40/20/40) and can be individually folded down to increase the luggage compartment capacity from 420 litres to a maximum of 1,350 litres.

The panorama glass sunroof, available in the new BMW X1 sDrive20d Exclusive, creates a particularly bright ambience. Seats in the new BMW X1 are electrically adjustable on both the driver and front seat passenger sides. A turbocharger with variable intake geometry and common-rail fuel injection gives the four-cylinder diesel in the new BMW X1 sDrive20d a maximum output of 130 kW/177 hp at an engine speed of 4,000 rpm as well as maximum torque of 350 Nm all the way from 1,750 to 3,000 rpm.

It accelerates to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds with the ability to achieve the top speed of 205 km/hr. The average fuel consumption is 15.24 km/ltr as measured by Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) for Indian market specifications. The 110 kW/150 hp four-cylinder petrol version featured in the new BMW X1 sDrive18i provides a similarly economical entry into the world of BMW X models. This engine delivers peak torque of 200 Nm at 3,600 rpm reaching its maximum output at 6,400 rpm.

Acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/hr comes in 10.4 seconds with top speed of 200 km/h. The average fuel consumption of BMW X1 sDrive18i is 11.24 km/ltr as measured by ARAI for Indian market specifications. All versions of the new BMW X1 are equipped as standard with six-speed automatic transmission with short reaction and gearshift times. In India, the new BMW X1 comes with the dynamic rear-wheel drive system which means the driver enjoys typical BMW agility and driving pleasure – namely precise handling, flawless cornering ability and incomparable dynamics.

Tata Nano Gets Coveted International Award

The Tata Nano has received the world's oldest and most coveted GOOD DESIGN Award for 2010, which is conferred annually by The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design together with The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies ( www.chi-athenaeum.org ). The award for the Tata Nano has come in the category of transportation.

Founded in Chicago in 1950, GOOD DESIGN bestows international recognition for advancing new, visionary, and innovative product concepts, invention and originality, and for stretching the envelope beyond what is considered ordinary product and consumer design. In 2010, GOOD DESIGN celebrated its 60-year anniversary as the world's oldest and most prestigious awards programme for product and graphic design.

The Tata Nano’s design is such that it offers an incredibly spacious passenger compartment which can comfortably seat four adults. With a length of just 3.1 metres, width of 1.5 metres and height of 1.6 metres, the Tata Nano has the smallest exterior footprint for a car in India but is 21% more spacious than the smallest car available today. A high seating position makes ingress and egress easy. Its small size coupled with a turning radius of just 4 metres, makes it extremely manoeuvrable in the smallest of parking slots.

The engine enables the car to have a top speed of 105 kmph and negotiate inclines with a gradeability of 30%. Its fuel efficiency of 23.6 km/litre, certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) under mandated test conditions, is the highest for any petrol car in India. The high fuel efficiency, coupled with a low kerb weight of 600 kg, ensures that the Tata Nano – at 101 gm / km – has the lowest CO2 emission amongst cars in India.

Since August this year, the company has already begun open sales of the Tata Nano, and it is already freely available in 12 states. Retail sales have substantially increased in the first five states of open sales. Besides its already existing showrooms, the company is setting up Special Nano Access Points for customers in the hinterlands to experience, test-drive or test-ride the car. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Celebrates Successful Year 2010

Jaguar Land Rover is celebrating a successful 2010 having received more than eighty international awards for its vehicles during the year. The tally of awards was shared almost equally between the two brands. Leading the charge for Land Rover was Discovery 4 with over 28 global awards this year bringing its total to 144 since launch in 2004.

Commenting on the awards Land Rover's Global Brand Director John Edwards said: "The Discovery 4 offers an exceptional breadth of capability. It is now one of the most highly-decorated vehicles ever and we are thrilled that it continues to receive such great recognition across the industry."

Other Land Rover nameplates also had a tremendous year with the Range Rover being voted the 'Car of the Decade' by readers of autocar.co.uk, the Range Rover Sport voted 'Best 4x4' by Auto Bild (Germany) and the Freelander 2 was voted 'Best Compact SUV' at the Auto Express Car of the Year Awards.

Jaguar's new XJ which went on sale earlier this year and got off to a flying start receiving more than 20 international honours including 'Best Luxury Car' from China's Auto News, 'Annual Limousine King’ from Quattroroute (Italy), 'Luxury Car of the Year' from Top Gear (UK), Automobile Magazine's '2011 Design of the Year' and 'Best Executive Sedan' at the Bloomberg Awards (US).

And it was not just production cars that caught the eye of the auto industry elite. The C-X75 concept car was named 'car of the show' at this year's Paris Automobile Show. Adrian Hallmark, Global Brand Director at Jaguar said: "Jaguar embarked on reinvigorating the brand in 2006 and we are delighted that our three all-new Jaguars have been so well received across the world in that time. We have been delighted with the tremendous response from the media to the new XJ, winning more than 20 international awards this year."

The motoring press are not the only collective who have heaped praise on the company in 2010. JD Power Associates in the U.S. named Jaguar as the leader in customer satisfaction having achieved the highest score in their annual Sales Satisfaction Index (SSI) StudySM – The brand also ranked as the highest luxury brand. This followed news from What Car? – Britain's biggest car buying guide – that Jaguar was named as a leading manufacturer in its owner satisfaction survey.

Not only did the XF scoop the title of best executive car on its JD Power debut (UK survey), but the XF finished second overall and helped Jaguar to its position as third out of 27 manufacturers – an improvement of 13 points from 2009. These awards further underpin a successful year for Jaguar Land Rover with earnings for the second quarter of the financial year at £238 million (after tax) and annual sales to November up 20.7% collectively.

Board Approves Hero Honda Split With Honda

Hero Honda Motors Ltd. (HHML) – the world's single largest two-wheeler manufacturer has signed a new licensing arrangement with Honda Motor Co., Japan, enabling higher growth by giving it the freedom to develop its own R&D capabilities and exploit global export and manufacturing opportunities. The respective Boards of Honda Motor Co. Japan and HHML approved the new licensing arrangement separately in Tokyo and New Delhi.

Kinetic Introduces New Fuel Injection System

Pune based Kinetic Group, one of the pioneers in the automobile and engineering space, along with their JV partner Ducati Energia of Italy, announced the launch of their latest technological innovation - "The EFI Lite". EFI Lite stands for complete Electronic Fuel Injection system, which enhances the performance and reduces emissions in compliance with the BS III /EURO III emission standards.

EFI system primarily consists of an Advanced Electronic Controller Unit (ECU) capable of managing up to 18 or 24 inputs and outputs allowing to optimize the combustion and minimize the fuel emissions in 2-wheelers. The ECU needs to be calibrated and fine tuned in accordance to vehicles' characteristics and perfectly integrated in order to control and manage additional components in the fuel injection system such as Throttle body, Injectors, Fuel pumps, Lamba sensors, Ignition coil, etc.

Worldwide is has been observed that new advanced technology and higher emission standards in two-wheeler and three-wheeler sectors rapidly call for new design and developments related to fuel injection systems, as these can not be achieved with the conventional carburettor. It is expected that within 5 years most of the vehicles worldwide will be equipped with fuel injection systems only, while carburettor technology would gradually find lesser and lesser applications.

Kinetic Communications and Ducati Energia formed a 50:50 JV in year 2007 for development and manufacture the full range of engine electrical/electronics. The JV's Pune based manufacturing facility currently supplies to Mahindra Two Wheelers, Piaggio India, etc and the JV also exports to customers in Europe & USA, including to Bombardier-Rotax, Aprila, Piaggio Italy etc.

The EFI technology will be available in India from January 2011 and is expected to gain more popularity in India on 2 wheelers and 3 wheelers fuel injection system vehicles, due to worldwide trend and necessity to improve the performance and to minimise the emissions.

The EV-neo is an electric scooter developed for businesses such as transport of heavy goods or delivery services and which delivers a clean and quiet ride without compromising powerfulness. Harley Davidson Bikes Booking in India Starts from 1 January 2011

The first two models that will be offered - the SuperLow and the Iron 883 - will be priced at Rs5.5 lakh and Rs6.5 lakh, respectively, the company said in a release on Tuesday

Motorcycle maker Harley-Davidson announced that bookings for the first bikes to roll out from its assembly facility will start from 1 January, 2011. The first two models that will be offered - the SuperLow and the Iron 883 - will be priced at Rs5.5 lakh and Rs6.5 lakh, respectively, the company said in a release on Tuesday.

Harley-Davidson didn't say when the deliveries would start. "We are yet to take a call on that," a company spokeswoman said. "We will only be able to tell you once the bookings start." The bikes will be the first to be assembled at its facility in Bawal, Haryana, and will join the 12 existing models on offer. These bikes are all imported as completely built units (CBUs).

Iconic motorcycle manufacturer Harley Davidson on Wednesday introduced two new models SuperLow and Iron 883 - the first mobikes to be assembled in India. The bikes will roll out of the firm's Haryana facility and bookings will commence from January 2011. The Superlow is priced at Rs 5.5 lakh (ex-showroom) while the Iron 883 comes in for Rs 6.5 lakh (ex-showroom), thus bringing down the entry price point for owning a Harley Davidson in India. The starting price of the company's existing 2010 model line-up in India is Rs 6.95 lakh.

Both bikes attract a price tag of $7,999 (Rs 3.62 lakh) in the US and if imported completely in India like the other mobikes, it would have retailed for around Rs 7.24 lakh as imported vehicles attract a 100% duty in India. Import of components however attract only 40% duties enabling the company to price them lower. The firm commenced operations in August 2009 and opened its first dealership in July 2010. It currently offers 12 models in its 2010 line-up in India, available through dealerships in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chandigarh and Hyderabad.

Volkswagen Polo Price Hiked by Volkswagen India

Volkswagen announced an increase in the price of the Polo. Starting January 1, 2011 this popular hatchback will witness a hike starting at 2.9 percent.

Commenting on this, Neeraj Garg, member of Board & Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt. Ltd. said "We have been faced with constant rise in input cost over the past several months and have tried our best to absorb it.

However, in order to continue to maintain our quality standards that our customers expect from us we have had to increase the price by a small percentage."

He further added "Customers, who book the Polo until December 31, 2010, will be able to avail their favourite car at the present prices."

The Polo was launched in India in March 2010 and has already sold more than 17,000 units as of November 2010.

Manufactured in Volkswagen's plant in Chakan, the Polo is the first locally made Volkswagen model to be launched by the European automobile major in India.

The nominees were judged by a panel of senior automobile experts who got together to vote for the most impressive car and motorcycle of the year. The voting system is very fair and transparent which makes the ICOTY and IMOTY amongst the most credible and coveted awards.

In addition, technical innovation and value for money were particularly important factors while deciding on the winner.

Cars and motorcycles that have had cosmetic facelifts or small mechanical changes like different power or drive trains, do not qualify for these awards. The country of origin does not matter, but they have to be sold in showrooms in India before 30th November of the previous year and should have been homologated for Indian type approval.

"The Indian Car of the Year award reflects India's standing in the global automotive market. It recognizes the efforts made by manufacturers to give us Indians the cars that have been engineered with us in mind. Over six years, the ICOTY award has grown in stature and today, it's something that all car manufacturers in India aspire for," said Srinivas Krishnan, Editor, Business Standard Motoring and Chairman, ICOTY 2011.

In the ICOTY Category, while Ford Figo emerged as the clear winner with 83 points, Volkswagen Vento came second with 57 points. There was a tie for the third spot between Volkswagen polo and Skoda Yeti with 37 points.

There was a close clash between the top three motorcycles in the IMOTY category. Honda CB Twister won with 66 points while giving close competition was Bajaj Pulsar 135 LS with 63 points. TVS Jive was in third position with 48 points.

The finalists for the ICOTY category this year were Chevrolet Beat, Ford Figo, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Nissan Micra, Skoda Yeti, Tata Aria, Volkswagen Polo and Volkswagen Vento. The finalists for the IMOTY category were Bajaj Pulsar 135LS, Bajaj Discover 150, Honda CB Twister, Mahindra Stallio, TVS Jive and TVS Max4R.

India's youngest F1 driver Karun Chandhok and India's youngest karting champion Jehan Daruvala were also present at the award ceremony. Famous celebrity, Sophie Chowdhury added glitz and glamour to the award ceremony and enthralled the audiences with her mind-blowing performance.

Toyota had also announced the name of the hatchback version, the Etios Liva.

Tata Motors today announced a host of benefits on the Tata Nano, as it deepens its customer reach-out initiatives to expand open sales of the car across the country.

The Tata Nano will now come with a 4-year / 60,000-km (whichever is earlier) manufacturer's warranty, at no extra cost. Besides being applicable on new deliveries, the warranty is also being extended to all existing owners of the car.

In addition, all new buyers have the option to avail of a comprehensive maintenance contract at only Rs.99 per month. This contract will help customers take care of running maintenance of the car.

These benefits will further enhance the satisfaction of Tata Nano users. Beginning July 2009 when despatches to those who had booked the car started, the company has delivered over 71,000 Tata Nanos. Customer satisfaction studies with current Tata Nano owners indicate that over 80% are satisfied or very satisfied with the car, because of it being small yet spacious, its performance, maneuverability, durability, mileage and safety. Some owners have taken their Tata Nanos on country-wide trips or to altitudes like Khardungla, the world's highest motorable road.

Toyota Etios Price Between Rs. 4.96 to 6.86 Lakh Launched in India

Toyota Etios IndiaToyota Kirloskar Motor launched the Etios Sedan today, marking the company's entry into the highly competitive B Segment in India. The Etios has been developed specifically for Indian customers – 'World First, India First, My First'.

The Toyota Etios sedan will be available in four variants, J, G, V and VX, competitively priced between 4,96,000/- and 6,86,500/- ex showroom Delhi. The product highlights include innovative styling, best-in-class cabin and luggage space, superior comfort, impressive fuel efficiency and the legendary Toyota QDR.

The Etios was launched by Mr. Akio Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation and scion of Toyota's founding family, on his maiden visit to India after taking over as the Head of the company. Also present were Mr. Akira Okabe (Senior Managing Director, TMC), Mr. Soichiro Okudaira (Managing Officer, TMC), Mr. Osamu Nagata (Managing Officer, TMC), Mr. Yoshinori Noritake (Chief Engineer - Etios, TMC), Mr. Vikram Kirloskar (Vice Chairman, TKM), Mr. Hiroshi Nakagawa (Managing Director, TKM) and Mr. Sandeep Singh (Deputy Managing Director-Marketing, TKM).

Mr. Yoshinori Noritake, Chief Engineer of the Etios spoke about the development of the product, he said: "It was very important to understand the needs of Indian car buyers before designing an India specific car. We learnt that Indian customers are very price conscious but at the same time want space and comfort for their family, and style to enhance their status. One of the strong points of the Etios sedan is its true sedan design – designed on a sedan platform and not as a hatch with a boot – smart packaging that makes it compact at the same time spacious. Toyota Etios Features, Mileage & Specifications:

(a) Exterior
A distinctive front grille with a smile line, sculpted surface and dynamic character-line in the front and rear, enhance the presence of the Etios. The rear has a fluent flowing C pillar, rounded end and three-dimensional combination lamps that enrich the vehicle's exterior from different angles.

(b) Interior
The seats are ergonomically designed units with integrated head rests. An instrument panel clearly divided into the information area and operation area with a large centre meter provides excellent visibility. The Etios has class best cabin and luggage space of 595L, a spacious 13L cooled glove box, seven one litre bottle holders, mobile holder and many more such useful storage spaces inside the car.

(c) Performance and Comfort
