Tata Nano Booking Starts in Four States

Cheapest Car Tata NanoTata Motors Ltd on Tuesday began accepting spot bookings for the Nano, billed the world's cheapest car, in four states. Unlike earlier, when buyers were selected through a draw at the launch, the Nano will now be available for a test drive and immediate bookings in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Karnataka, the country's largest auto maker said in a statement. It launched open sales of the Nano in Kerala in August. Tata Motors launched the Nano in March 2009 but owing to production constraints, decided to select 155,000 buyers through a computerized draw and did not accept bookings after that. The cars were to be delivered in two phases.

In July, the company said it would ramp up production of the Nano as its factory in Sanand, Gujarat, turned operational ahead of schedule. It also began intimating retainee buyers that their cars would be delivered by the end of the year-which Tata said was the final step before it opened up sales of the Nano. Retainee buyers refers to those who were selected in the draw but had been left out of the first round of deliveries of the ultra compact car in 2009. The same month, Tata Motors hiked the ex-showroom price-excluding taxes, insurance and other such costs-of the Nano by '3,700-6,894 in Delhi. The first 100,000 customers, though, are protected from the hike and will get their Nanos at the announced price of '1.23-1.72 lakh. Tata Motors has sold 67,752 Nanos since it began delivery in July 2009.

The new BMW X5: Description in Brief

The newly interpreted design vocabulary typical of BMW X models comprises above all the structure of the front apron and the position of the standard fog lamps as well as a redesigned rear apron adopting the structure of the front end. An increase in the percentage of front and rear end surfaces painted in body colour emphasises the on-road characteristics of the BMW X5, thereby reflecting the vehicle's higher level of sportiness. With its distinctively contoured bonnet, large-sized BMW kidney grille and dual round headlights slightly cut off at the top, the new BMW X5 boasts a strikingly expressive front end that symbolises power and presence.

In conjunction with the Xenon headlights, fitted as standard, the dual round headlights incorporate LED Corona Rings. The L-shaped, redesigned taillights, each with two homogeneously illuminated LED light banks, reflect the brand-typical nighttime design of the rear end.

The interior of the new BMW X5 is characterised by a generous amount of space and a modern, sophisticated design. In addition to the high seating position, the BMW X5 can accommodate up to seven persons with the optional third-row seats.

Thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics, all versions of the new BMW X5 include brake energy regeneration. In overrun phase, i.e. as soon as the driver stops accelerating, the released kinetic energy is transformed by brake energy regeneration into electrical energy that can be stored. So the battery can be charged "free of charge". The battery then needs less power input when the vehicle starts up again, which frees up the engine and reduces consumption.

The new top-of-the-range model is the BMW X5 xDrive50i, whose V8 power unit featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo and direct petrol injection (High Precision Injection) has an output of 300 kW/407 hp. It produces a maximum torque of 600 Nm at 1,750 - 4,500 rpm and accelerates from 0 - 100 kmph in 5.5 seconds.

The all-aluminium six-cylinder diesel with TwinPower Turbo and Common Rail direct injection featured in the BMW X5 xDrive30d delivers an output of 180 kW/245 hp. It produces a maximum torque of 540 Nm at 1,750 - 3,000 rpm and accelerates from 0 - 100 kmph in 7.6 seconds.

All versions of the new BMW X5 are equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The standard equipment of the new BMW X5 also includes the speed-dependent Servotronic steering assistance system. The new BMW X5 is equipped as standard with the latest generation of the iDrive control system. The new BMW X5 offers a multitude of unique driver assistance systems for optimising comfort, the use of infotainment functions as well as safety.

BMW India Strengths Production Capacity & Dealer Network

The BMW Group is strengthening its commitment in the growth market of India. As a first step, local production capacity at the BMW plant in Chennai has been increased from 3,000 to 5,400 units and the dealer network further expanded.

"India is a market that holds great potential for the future for us and is a building block in our global market offensive. Our success so far has proved that our production-follows-the-market strategy, which has already been successful in markets such as the US and China, is the right approach," said Frank-Peter Arndt, member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, responsible for Production. "At the same time as we are expanding capacity, we will also be gearing the plant to produce a further model for the Indian market, the X1, starting in November 2010 and thereby opening up new customer segments."

In addition to strengthening capacity, a new vehicle logistics centre will also be set up on the grounds of the Chennai plant, for which land has already been acquired. By mid-2012, the BMW Group will have invested a total of EUR 30mn in India since launching production there in 2007.

At the same time, BMW is also stepping up its local sales and marketing activities. To meet rising customer demand for BMW vehicles and services, its sales network will be systematically expanded to 22 dealerships by 2011 - almost doubling its size since early 2009. Towards the end of this year, BMW Financial Services will also begin offering its financial services in the Indian market for the first time.

In the first eight months of this year alone, BMW sales in India climbed 43% to reach a total of 3,301 units. This means that the BMW Group has already sold almost as many vehicles in India this year as in the whole of 2009.

"The ongoing expansion of our dealer network means that we will be present in all major regions of India and able to reach more than 95 percent of our potential buyers," according to Andreas Schaaf, president of BMW Group's Indian subsidiary. "Having taken the lead in the premium segment for the first time last year, we aim to maintain our leading position this year with the market launch of the new 5 Series. We are also confident that we will be able to increase sales substantially over the coming years."

The BMW Group has been actively involved in India through its own sales company since 2006 and has been able to increase annual sales more than tenfold, to 3,619 units between 2006 and 2009. Since March 2007, BMW has also had its own production in India, at its Chennai plant in the state of Tamil Nadu, which builds the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series for the Indian market.

Mahindra's Power Scooters Conquer Khardung La

Since their launch in 2009, the Mahindra Rodeo and Mahindra Duro have proved themselves as true city slickers, capable of taking on the toughest urban terrain. Now, these nifty two wheelers have proved their mettle in the mountains as well.

In August 2009, two intrepid journalists from Overdrive magazine, Halley Prabhakar and Kshitij Sharma, decided to ride the Rodeo and the Duro to Khardung La, the world's highest motorable pass.

But would the scooters be up to the challenge?

The answer proved to be a resounding yes as these gearless scooters admirably lived up to expectations, in conditions which are known to prove harsh for humans, much less machines. As Halley and Kshitij ascended further into the mountains, the air got thinner and the road got tougher. Yet, the Rodeo and the Duro valiantly soldiered on, even as their riders suffered from altitude sickness.

From rain and steep inclines uphill to boulders, and rough gravel roads that seemed to go on for miles, the Power Scooters took it all in their stride.

As Halley himself put it "they should have been battered, plastics should have shattered and tyres should have been slashed to ribbons. What actually happened was the scooters looked ready to head back without a moment's pause and it was we who felt battered and shattered."
