Car Sales Rise 22.6% in February in India

India's domestic passenger car sales grew by a fair clip in February, as potential buyers stepped up purchases ahead of the Union Budget amid fears of a hike in excise duty, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) said on Wednesday.

Car sales in India rose by 22.6% in February to 189,008 units in February, from 154,132 units sold in the same month last year, the industry body said.

The SIAM figures today also showed that motorcycle sales in the country grew by 20.8% during the month to 776,051 units from 642,419 units sold in the same month last year.

Total two-wheeler sales in February jumped by 22.04% to 102,2272 units from 837,653 units in the corresponding period last year, SIAM data revealed.

Sales of commercial vehicles climbed by 10.49% to 64,057 units from 57,977 units in the year-ago period, SIAM data showed.

Total sales of automobiles across categories grew by 21.32% to 1,370,932 units in February, from 1,130,037 units sold in the corresponding month last year, it added.
