Top Used Cars: Best 10 Used Cars for You

Since car sales have been on a high in the past year, moving up briskly since the 2008 economic downturn, it has directly affected the used car market. Now, more cars are ending up for resale at a much faster pace, which is why it's the right time to haggle for the best bargains.

With car prices set to soar in the new year, it's a good time to scrounge around for discounts and deals. If, however, you are driven by the desire for higher savings, you can opt for a pre-owned car. You will not only have the satisfaction of owning a vehicle but, more importantly, at a much lesser price.

Since car sales have been on a high in the past year, moving up briskly since the 2008 economic downturn, it has directly affected the used car market. Now, more cars are ending up for resale at a much faster pace, which is why it's the right time to haggle for the best bargains. Here's a look at cars in different segments, all under Rs. 10 lakh, to help you decide which one to pick. You can get an even lower price depending on the mileage and car's condition.

1. Hyundai Santro

The best small car not to sport a Maruti badge. A perfect combination of fuel efficiency, reliability and enough torque for driving around the city.

Why should I buy? Because everyone has a Maruti and you don't want one. It has a better build and features than other cars in this price segment and the Korean manufacturer has proved itself on reliability over the past decade.

Is it fuel-efficient? In one word, yes. It gives a mileage of about 14 km per litre (kmpl) in the city. The Hyundai service network is second only to Maruti's and the spare parts are cheap too.

How is the ride? The ride quality isn't the best, but is par for the course. It has ample headroom, though the rear seat isn't very comfortable.

Will it break the bank? Prices are on the lower side and you can easily find a two-year old model in good condition.

2. Hyundai i10

The second hatchback option also comes from Hyundai's stable. It was launched as Santro's replacement and is made in India for global usage.

Why should I buy? Because Santro is too old and the i10 looks sleeker. It also has a more powerful engine and comes loaded with accessories.

Is it fuel-efficient? Yes, again. The Kappa model will run about 16 km per litre, while the older 1.1 iRDE model will give you 14 km.

How is the ride? It has a good suspension, which ensures a smooth ride on bumpy roads. For a small car, it's also quite stable at high speeds.

Will it break the bank? It's a well-built car and offers value for money. The launch of the latest version of the 1.2 Kappa model means you might get the older one for even less.

3. Maruti Swift

The best big hatchback. It's fun to drive, good to look at and fuel-efficient. Though it has been five years since its launch, there's still a waiting period for the car.

Why should I buy? A good option if you want a spacious hatchback while sticking to the Maruti family.

Is it fuel-efficient? The petrol model offers a mileage of 12 kmpl, while for the diesel one, it is almost 16 kmpl. The Maruti service network is the most widespread and is known for the easily available, cheap spare parts.

How is the ride? It's a sporty car and comfortable to drive. Rear passengers may find the space a little constricted. Avoid buying a tuned or modified car as it could be rife with problems.

Will it break the bank? Maruti's star performer will give you good value for your money.

4. Maruti Alto

If words like 'fuel efficiency' and 'no frills' appear on your priority list, it's the car to go for.

Why should I buy? Because you want a reliable, timetested vehicle without straining your wallet.

Is it fuel-efficient? The puny engine's fuel requirement is lower compared with other cars and you can extract as much as 18 kmpl from it. Maintenance is Maruti's forte and the after-sales service is good.

How is the ride? The Alto isn't very spacious and its seats are not the most supportive. However, the small size is a boon in metros where parking hassles are aplenty.

Will it break the bank? Not at all. However, make sure you don't buy one which has clocked too many miles.

5. Chevrolet Spark

In 2007, Chevrolet resurrected the Daewoo Matiz as the Spark, retaining the same lines. The latter's USP has been its reasonable price.

Why should I buy? Because it's cheap, and if you buy a recent model, you could avail of the threeyear free maintenance package that Chevrolet offers on new cars.

Is it fuel-efficient? The Spark can run 15 km on a litre of petrol and the 'no maintenance charge' offer is also financially attractive. Spare parts are affordable too.

How is the ride? The peppy engine makes it easy to handle the car. However, the seats are cramped and can comfortably seat only four passengers.

Will it break the bank? Not if you buy a relatively new model. However, make sure that the car hasn't been abused by the previous owner. There is a tendency to drive a car hard and carelessly because it's cheap to buy and run.

6. Tata Indica

The first hatchback from Tata Motors captivated the audience when it was first shown at the 1998 Auto Expo and has witnessed a number of upgrades.

Why should I buy? Because you need a diesel vehicle for highways and don't have the money for a Swift. The Turbo has a turbocharged diesel engine, which provides more power.

Is it fuel-efficient? The Xeta petrol gives a mileage of almost 12 kmpl, the diesel version gives 14 kmpl, and for the Turbo, it is about 13 kmpl.

How is the ride? Opt for the diesel car if you can live with the cheap plastic and engine noise. It is very comfortable and the ride quality is good.

Will it break the bank? The diesel version won't.

7. Honda City

The best petrol-powered sedan in India, it's three generations old but shows no sign of slackening. The second generation car was launched in 2004 and is now easily available as a pre-owned vehicle.

Why should I buy? Because the Honda brand commands respect internationally. The second generation sedan is one of the most comfortable.

Is it fuel-efficient? The engine is powerful and frugal, giving about 12 kmpl in the city and 17 kmpl on the highway.

How is the ride? It is spacious, with a 500-litre boot, and the quality of plastic is very good.

Will it break the bank? If you drive more than 100 km a day, a diesel car would be a better buy.

8. Skoda Octavia

Skoda's first offering in India was launched in 2001 and gave it the luxury image and brand loyalty which rival that of a Honda.

Why should I buy? Because it leads the pack when it comes to smooth ride and handling.

Is it fuel-efficient? The 90 bhp, 1.9-litre TDI diesel engine is very efficient and gives a mileage of about 13 kmpl.

How is the ride? The build quality is one of the best and the ride and handling are smooth. It's very spacious with a 560-litre boot.

Will it break the bank? The diesel model offers more value than the petrol version due to the lower running cost. However, this version is more likely to have run a fair bit too.

9. Mahindra Scorpio

The first modern SUV from Mahindra was launched in 2002 and has been upgraded regularly.

Why should I buy? Because it's bigger than a sedan and seats more people in comfort than a three-box. The butch design has been selling well, even in the used car market.

Is it fuel-efficient? Diesel cost means that even a low efficiency of 7 kmpl with the old engine won't pinch. The mHawk is only a little more efficient at 8 kmpl. Buy a relatively recent model, if possible, and preferably the mHawk, which has an updated cabin.

How is the ride? The extra room is a boon, especially for long trips. There is also an automatic gearbox that you can install, but finding one is difficult.

Will it break the bank? Not if you opt for an older model, though even the oldest mHawk model costs more than the newer other versions.

10. Ford Endeavour

The XXXL SUV is among the few luxury diesel SUVs available in India. Its extra wide tyres make it one of the best vehicles for off-road driving.

Why should I buy? Opt for it only if you plan to go dune bashing or exploring jungles. Or if you want to intimidate others on the road.

Is it fuel-efficient? Again, the low cost of diesel helps to curb running costs. However, the 2.5-litre diesel version will barely run 8 kmpl, while the 3-litre one will give 7 kmpl.

How is the ride? The large proportions mean there is no dearth of space and seven people can fit in easily.

Will it break the bank? The older models will be cheaper, while the 4WD 3-litre SUV will be expensive.

Mahindra Racing To Debut in Race On March 17-20

Mahindra Racing – part of the US $7.1 billion Mahindra Group – will make its race debut on March 17-20 at the 5.38km Losail International Circuit for round 1 of the 125cc MotoGP World Championship.

Mahindra is the first Indian motorcycle manufacturer to enter a team into the prestigious MotoGP World Championship with its GP125 racing motorcycle, entered in the 125cc class.

Produced by Mahindra’s Italy-based Engines Engineering division, the GP125 will be ridden by riders Danny Webb from Britain and Marcel Schrötter from Germany.

Qatar is likely to present a tough debut venue. Its desert location means sand is often blown on to the track, making finding a good bike set-up difficult on the constantly changing surface. It is also the season’s only night race, held under floodlights, giving added difficulties to the riders.
Speaking about Mahindra’s participation in the MotoGP Championships, Mr. Anand Mahindra, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Mahindra Group, said, “It is a matter of great pride for us to represent India in the world’s most prestigious two-wheeled race series. Mahindra Motorcycles will compete with the best in class, and it will be an ideal opportunity for us to showcase our strengths in the engineering and IT domains. MotoGP is the ultimate test for the finest talents in motorcycle racing and an immensely popular championship with a cult following. Our participation will also help us leverage the power of global branding for the Mahindra Group.”

Team Principal Mufaddal Choonia heralds the team’s debut. “I am very proud to be part of the first Indian team in MotoGP racing. This is a big challenge for everyone involved and we are all working very hard to ensure we are competitive.

“Mahindra are a US $7.1 billion multinational group, and we build three things: products, services and possibilities. We are new to the two-wheeler market and our entry in MotoGP shows our ambition.

“Ultimately, we are not in the sport to make up the numbers, we are here to win. That might sound ambitious, but that’s the way we are. I know that this is a big task, but we are all focused and we are in the battle for the long term” said Choonia.

Leading Mahindra’s charge is 19-year-old Danny Webb from Tunbridge Wells, England, who starts his fifth season in the category.

“I think my experience and potential attracted the team to me, and the strength and back-up of the Mahindra Group combined with the expertise at Engines Engineering drew me to them. Qatar’s our first race together and we’re focused on improving steadily through the season.
“I like the Qatar track but racing at night is an usual challenge. It’s a bit like being in a Playstation game, and you have to learn to ignore the shadows from the riders behind you as the floodlights makes it look like they are riding into you all the time. I’m confident we’ll do a good job.”

Eighteen year-old Marcel Schrötter from Pflugdorf, Germany, is entering his second season in the category. “I’m looking forward to Qatar and it will be great to be racing again. I am still learning the GP125, and the bike is still being developed so it is difficult to know how well we will go in our first race but I will be pushing hard all the way.”

Watching over activities during the four days action in Qatar is team manager, Nicola Casadei. “It is fair to say that testing was not as straight-forward as we hoped as we were interrupted by a lot of rain, but we have a good understanding of the bike. We know our strengths and we know where we have to improve. Qatar will give us a good gauge of where we sit relative to our rivals.”
The Grand Prix of Qatar opens with practice sessions for the 125cc class on March 17-18, followed by qualifying on March 19 and the race on March 20.

The Stallio will be available at 370 Mahindra 2 Wheelers dealerships across the country. The Stallio comes with a four year manufacturer's warranty. The distribution model for Mojo will be different and therefore, would be available only in select outlets.

The Mahindra Stallio and Mojo are all set to storm the motorcycle segment with their sleek, sporty contours, Italian styling and comfort. The bikes incorporate design elements from the Italian boutique design house, Engines Engineering which has worked for marques such as Ducati, MV Augusta and Benelli.

Mahindra Stallio:
Biking will soon take on a whole new dimension with this powerful steed. The Mahindra Stallio is a tough and durable bike with several stylish features which puts it in a distinct motorcycling segment. These include digital speedometer, powerful LED tail lamps, pilot LED lamps and a fully flush fuel tank cap.

The Mahindra Stallio incorporates a convenient, pro touch electric start which allows you to take off at the touch of a button, even in heavy traffic conditions. The multi reflector headlamp coupled with LED lighting with clear lens indicators in the headlamp, tail lamps and pilot lamps enhance front and rear visibility, making night riding a safe experience. These LED lights are more resistant to failures from vibration, generate almost no heat and consume very little power.

The bike's chassis features a rugged, double cradle frame, ensuring greater stability and less possibility of deformation in future. The superior braking system, more responsive controls that perform well in a variety of conditions, including water and mud, makes the Stallio a very safe bike. The sturdy rear grab rail offers the pillion rider a firm grip, ensuring safety.

The large, fully digital display – the first in this segment - comes equipped with a speedometer, fuel gauge, tachometer and clock. It also gives you an idea of the distance travelled in one trip. The Stallio's visor features a sharp, inverted arrow design which is sure to stop traffic when you zoom past. This nifty bike sports cool racing style alloy wheels which are strong and lightweight. They not only provide more stability at corners but also have better tolerance to shocks and ensure good heat dissipation. These trendy alloys are complemented by class leading wheel base of 1265 mm which provide a stable ride and good ground clearance. The fuel tank cap blends seamlessly with the body of the bike, further adding to its style quotient.

The Mahindra Stallio is available in a choice of five shades – Derby Red, Colt Black, Equus Blue, Buckskin Yellow and Ranch Green.

Mahindra Mojo 300cc Bike:
Think Flower Power. Think groovy classic style but with a contemporary twist. Think Mahindra Mojo.

A testosterone packed 300 cc bike with cool retro styling, the Mojo blends the best of global motorcycle technology and design. It is a handcrafted machine and a one of its kind lifestyle motorcycle which will soon go into production. Mahindra 2 Wheelers has, in fact, devised a unique marketing and promotion strategy for this ultimate performance bike which will be revealed when the bike will be available for sale in the next 3-4 months.

This modern classic is driven by a 4V DOHC engine which offers peak power of 26 BHP @ 8500 rpm and maximum torque of 24 Nm @ 7000 rpm, making it a performance biker's dream come true. It also features a 6 speed gearbox, as opposed to the regular 5 speed gearbox found amongst its peers, along with a sporty dual exhaust for the right propulsion.

The Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) system has been developed by Ducati Energia of Italy. In an industry first, the Mojo sports inverted front shock absorbers developed by Paioli of Italy, which ensures superior shock absorbing ability at high speeds. This is complemented by a horizontally mounted mono shox at the rear, allowing for much more comfortable ride. Radially mounted assembly also helps in accurate braking.

The Mojo is the first ever motorcycle in India to sport Pirelli tubeless radials. They are also the widest tyres in their class (4" x 17" at the rear), ensuring greater stability. These are complemented by edgy front petal disc brakes which are the largest in the segment at 320 mm to ensure safe braking. There's a disc brake at the rear as well.

The bike also features LED pilot lamps and tail lamps with clear lens indicators in the headlamp, ensuring greater visibility for the rider. The display includes a digital speedometer with fuel gauge, tripmeter, gear shift indicator, and analogue tachometer. The bike also sports indicators on the rear view mirrors, which are not seen on Indian bikes.

This showstopper sports an aerodynamic ‘tear drop' shape and a classic gold frame assembly with twin headlamps adding to the bike's distinctly retro look. The dual pipe frame adds strength to the overall structure of the bike, while the under cowl enhances the Mojo's macho appeal. This ‘exoskeleton' look is usually only found in top notch brands.

The Mojo is available in a choice of two colours – red and black. Customers also have the option of customising their bikes with a range of decals.

The Two Wheeler Sector of Mahindra aims to design and market a full range of scooters and motorcycles for the Indian and global markets, thus establishing a robust and end-to-end two-wheeler business in every segment of the industry.

Mahindra's Power Scooters Conquer Khardung La

Since their launch in 2009, the Mahindra Rodeo and Mahindra Duro have proved themselves as true city slickers, capable of taking on the toughest urban terrain. Now, these nifty two wheelers have proved their mettle in the mountains as well.

In August 2009, two intrepid journalists from Overdrive magazine, Halley Prabhakar and Kshitij Sharma, decided to ride the Rodeo and the Duro to Khardung La, the world's highest motorable pass.

But would the scooters be up to the challenge?

The answer proved to be a resounding yes as these gearless scooters admirably lived up to expectations, in conditions which are known to prove harsh for humans, much less machines. As Halley and Kshitij ascended further into the mountains, the air got thinner and the road got tougher. Yet, the Rodeo and the Duro valiantly soldiered on, even as their riders suffered from altitude sickness.

From rain and steep inclines uphill to boulders, and rough gravel roads that seemed to go on for miles, the Power Scooters took it all in their stride.

As Halley himself put it "they should have been battered, plastics should have shattered and tyres should have been slashed to ribbons. What actually happened was the scooters looked ready to head back without a moment's pause and it was we who felt battered and shattered."

The eagerly anticipated launch of Mahindra 2 Wheelers’ new range of motorcycles is just around the corner and to add to the excitement, there’s a specially created teaser campaign that’s all set to hit TV screens in the coming week.

Shot extensively on the world renowned Vallelunga Moto GP race track in Rome, Italy, the ad highlights the bikes’ Italian design credentials and the fact that they have undergone rigorous tests in Italy before coming to India.

About the campaign:
It’s test day at Vallelunga as a team of engineers and a few spectators look towards the race track with eager anticipation. All attention is focused on the circuit as a bike appears in the distance and zooms past the curious onlookers. The camera then cuts to the pit stop and control rooms where you see various monitors displaying the evaluation parameters used to test the bike.

The engineers are elated – the bike has passed the test with flying colours!

The ad has the message: Tested In Italy, Coming to India – Mahindra Motorcycles towards the end.

The ad ends with a musical tune sign off that has the potential to become a signature tune for all advertising of Mahindra 2 Wheelers. While the ad does not show the details of the bike/s, it certainly leaves the viewer with the impression that the Mahindra bikes would have all the latest technological gadgetry courtesy the Italian lineage. The ad will be visible on all key genres of channels ranging from music, movies, mass, news, regional and sports and also on Youtube.

The ad gently exhorts the potential motorcycle buyer to postpone his decision and check out the bikes at the Mahindra show room.

The ad was directed by Andrea Ranalli who is renowned for his work on European Moto GP circuits. The Creative Director is Robby Mathew of Interface Communications.

Mahindra 2 Wheelers’ motorcycles incorporate design elements from the Bologna based Engines Engineering, a boutique design house which was acquired by the Mahindra Group in 2008. In addition to Mahindra 2 Wheelers, Engines Engineering also undertakes design work for companies such as Ducati, MV Augusta and Benelli.

Mahindra Wins Bid For Ssangyong (SYMC) Acquisition

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M), India’s leading manufacturer of utility vehicles, emerged as the preferred bidder for the acquisition of a majority stake in South Korean SUV maker, Ssangyong Motor Company (SYMC). The preferred bidder status would require it to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with SYMC, followed by a detailed due diligence process.

SYMC is a Korean manufacturer of auto and aggregates, with 7 models under 5 brands. The 7 models include 2 large sized sedans, 4 SUVs and 1 MPV. It also has a manufacturing plant for gasoline and diesel engines as well as axles. SYMC is a significant player in the SUV segment in Korea, having recorded 1.3 million SUV sales from 1990 to 2009. It has a strong brand and presence in Europe, Russia, South America, the Middle East, Africa and Asia. Established in 1962, SYMC has more than 1,200 dealers globally. It has R&D manpower strength of around 600 people and modern R&D infrastructure for design, testing and validation.

This strategic acquisition, when concluded, would make Mahindra and SYMC together a force to reckon with in the global SUV space. It is intended that SYMC will continue to function as an independent entity with Korean management.

“Korea is one of the world’s leading centres of automotive excellence and Ssangyong brings with it a rich legacy of R&D and innovation. Mahindra and Ssangyong will create synergy, which will make us significant global players,” said Mr. Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman and Managing Director, Mahindra Group.

“Ssanyong has very strong competencies and capabilities in technology. We are committed to leverage this competency by investing in a new Ssangyong product portfolio to gain momentum in global markets,” said Dr. Pawan Goenka, President, Automotive and Farm Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd.

There are strong complementarities between the SYMC and Mahindra portfolio of products, providing an opportunity to create distinct positioning. The wide sales and distribution networks and complementary product lines will provide access to many overseas markets for both companies. There is also an opportunity to introduce a premium portfolio of SUVs in the Indian market, providing a new growth avenue for Ssangyong and further strengthening Mahindra’s dominant position.

M&M Q1 Reports: Net Profit up 40%

The Board of Directors of Mahindra and Mahindra Limited today announced the unaudited financial results for the quarter ended 30th June 2010 for the company and for the consolidated Mahindra Group.

Q1 F2011 - M&M Standalone results:
The Gross Revenues and Other Income of Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. for the quarter ended 30th June 2010 is Rs.5663.5 crores as against Rs.4711.8 crores during the corresponding period last year - a growth of 20.2%. Profit after tax for the current quarter is Rs. 562.4 crores as against Rs. 400.9 crores Q1 last year - a growth of 40.3%. The Operating Margin for the quarter is 15.03% as compared to 14.35% in Q1 F2010. The good financial results of the company for the quarter is due to higher volumes, focused cost control, prudent financial management resulting in lower interest expenses and a fuller realisation of the synergies arising from its acquisition of the erstwhile Punjab Tractor's Ltd.

In the current quarter the company continued its dominant position in the UV market with a market share of 59.4%. The company sold 53,948 utility vehicles in the quarter as against 48,720 utility vehicles in Q1 F2010, thus recording a volume growth of 11%. All products of the company, viz. Bolero, Scorpio, Xylo and the Pick Ups performed well during the quarter. The company exported 3125 vehicles during the quarter as against 1145 nos. in Q1 last year - an impressive growth of 173%. The company's products performed very well in SAARC, South Africa and South American markets.

In Q1 F2011 the company sold 47,916 tractors under the Mahindra & Swaraj brands as compared to 42130 nos. in Q1 last year - a growth of 13.7%. The company's domestic market share for the quarter stood at a commendable 40.7%. The company's tractor exports at 2376 nos. in the quarter registered a strong growth of 71.4% over the 1386 nos. exported in Q1 last year.

Q1 F2011 - Group Consolidated Results (not subjected to Limited Review)
The Gross Revenues and Other Income for the quarter ended 30th June 2010 grew by 9.4 % to Rs. 8,576.2 crores (USD 1.8 billion) from Rs.7,841.4 crores (USD 1.7 billion) in last year. The consolidated group profit for the year after exceptional items, prior-period adjustments and tax and after deducting minority interests is Rs.620.8 crores (USD 132.9 million) as compared to Rs.431.9 crores (USD 92.5 million) earned in the previous year - a growth of 43.7%.

In March 2010, with AT&T exercising its stock options, Tech Mahindra Ltd (TML) and its subsidiaries ceased to be group subsidiaries and became Joint Ventures of the Company. As a result of this change, the financials of TML Group from Q1 F2011 instead of being consolidated 100% are, as required by Accounting Standard AS 27, consolidated only in proportion to the Company's shareholding in TML. Hence the Group Revenues are not comparable with that of the previous years. On a comparable basis the Gross revenues and Other Income of the Group for the current quarter is Rs 9218.7 crores (USD 2.0 billion) - a growth of 17.6% over Q1 last year.

The Group numbers reported above do not include that of Satyam Computers Services Ltd. whose accounts are under restatement.

As on 30th June 2010, the Group comprised of 103 Subsidiaries, 5 Joint Ventures and 11 Associates.

During the current quarter, some of the major group companies like Mahindra Finance, Mahindra Lifespaces and Mahindra Ugine Steel significantly improved their performance over the previous year. The performance of Mahindra Finance with a 23% growth in consolidated revenues and an 86% increase in profits, and that of Mahindra Lifespaces with a 41% growth in revenues and a 39% profit growth, deserve special mention.
